Freda Joyce Cargill, 88, longtime resident of Dewey, OK, gained her angel wings on December 31, 2021.

Joyce was born on May 16, 1933, in Cushing, OK to Ambrose Mears and Caroline (Sorrels) Mears. She was raised in Cushing by Caroline Bessie Mears, along with her seven siblings. Joyce met Danny Cargill in Cushing, while she worked at Vee Drug Store and attending Cushing High School. Joyce graduated from Cushing High School in 1950. Dan and Joyce were married Feb. 24, 1951, in Belleville, Illinois. They were happily married for 68 years. In their early years, Dan and Joyce resided in Germany before moving back to Cushing, then later to Pawhuska, Stillwater and finally Dewey, OK. Dan and Joyce enjoyed square dancing, bird watching, flea marketing and camping all over the States. Together they raised four children, Les, Bryan, Lori and Marissa. Joyce graduated from Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Summa Cum Laude. She taught music at Oak Park Elementary, Hoover Elementary, Kane Elementary and Ranch Heights Elementary, all in Bartlesville, OK. She sang in the choir at Good Shepherd, along with playing the bells and organ at church. She also taught piano in her home for many years. She was able to touch many students’ lives, including her four children, sharing her love for music. Joyce enjoyed working in her flower beds, bird watching, and loving on her grandchildren. As her daughters would tell her often, we got this momma! We got this momma, love you more.

She is survived by her four children, Les and Lee Ann Cargill, Bryan Cargill, Lori Cargill Truitt, and Marissa and David Newsome; sister, Helen Nichols; and seven grandchildren, Steven Cargill, Miranda Cargill, Jessica and Clayton Reese, Kelby Foreman, Shelby Foreman, Dagan Newsome, and Tristan Newsome; three great-grandchildren, Caden Cargill, Caysen Cargill, and Brida Reese.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Dan Cargill; her parents, Ambrose and Caroline Mears; her brothers, Glen Mears, Robert Mears and Dick Mears; her sisters, Emelyn Tolan, Geneva Mason and Norma Hermanstorfer.

Joyce’s family will receive friends at the Davis Family Funeral Home – Dewey Chapel, 918-534-3030, 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey, on Friday, from 6-8 p.m.

Visitation will also be held on Friday from 10-8. Services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, with Janis Lussmyer officiating.

Interment will follow in the Dewey Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home – Dewey Chapel.
