Deceased: Howard Lee Edwards December 31, 1923 – February 12, 2015
Date: February 15, 2015
Born in Wagoner, Oklahoma to John and Elizabeth Edwards. Howard talked his
father into lying for him so that he could join the Oklahoma National Guard at
age 15. After that service, he joined the 42nd Division of the US Army and
fought in World War II. He was wounded on his 21st birthday on top of a mountain
in Italy. He was very proud of his Purple Heart status and was honored years
later to participate in Veteran's Day parades by driving his vintage Cadillac.
After the war, Howard and his bride, Elizabeth, moved to Indiana to find work
and to raise their family, Thomas and Sandra. During their forty years there he
ran service stations and worked at Ford Motor Company. After retirement, they
moved back to Muskogee to be close to family.
Howard's post-retirement job was as a landlord and his hobbies were collecting
coins and Roseville pottery. He and Elizabeth loved to travel to all of the US
states, to many foreign countries and, most of all, to visit their beloved
children and grandchildren.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, half-brothers Estes and Roy Ford and
siblings Willard, Mildred and Leonard Edwards. Howard lost his wife of 62 years
and his son in the past two years, which broke his heart, but he knew they were
waiting for him in heaven.
He is survived by his daughter Sandy Pollack (Joel), daughter-in-law Deb Edwards
and grandchildren Eric (Andrea), Brittany (Dave), Jessica (Mike), Whitney
(John), Blair (Mickey) and great-grandchildren Ethan and Mitchell.
Viewing hours will be from 4 PM – 6 PM on Monday, February 16th at
Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
A 21-gun military salute will honor him at the graveside memorial at 10:00 AM
Tuesday at the Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner. The family is asking that in lieu of
flowers, donations be made to the www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral
Home. Condolences to the family may be made at www.foster-petering.com.
