George E. Mays, age 90, a
native of Stilwell, and long-time resident of Tulsa, died Sunday,
February 11, 2007 in Houma, LA., where he recently moved.
He was the son of Gillis and Mamie Thurber Mays.
His family were early settlers
in Adair county, arriving around the time of statehood from Kentucky.
George grew up living in the communities of Stilwell, Bunch, Lyons
Switch, and Marble City, Oklahoma.
He served in the Army during
World War II, participating in the Battle of the Bulge.
He married Iona Vail on May
18, 1953.
He was preceded in death by
his wife Iona Vail Mays, parents Gillis and Mamie Thurber Mays, and
brother and sister Ralph and Mary Lou Mays.
He is survived by his daughter
and son-in-law Lynda Mays Kelley and Dennis Kelley of Hourna, LA., son
and daughter-in-law Lonnie and Crystal Mays of Tulsa, OK., grandson Nick
Phillips of Tulsa, OK., granddaughter Rosa Kelley of Fredricksburg, VA,
and one great-grandchild.
Also surviving are sisters Christine Taylor and Shirley Burke of
Murrieta, CA., brothers Jerry and Alex Mays of Tulsa, OK., Joe Mays of
Eugene, OR., Jack Mays of Paramount, CA., and Henry Mays of Bellflower,
CA., along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a member of Lewis Ave Free Will Baptish Church.
Services and burial will be
held on Friday, February 16th at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel in Tulsa,
OK.
Arrangements are under the direction of Alderwoods-Health Funeral Home.
