Mary S. Drake (nee Underwood) passed peacefully from this world into God’s eternal care on this day December 22, 2022. She was surrounded by the love of her family, friends and the music that she loved.

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Mary lived her life throughout the U.S. in Glendale and Redlands CA, Dallas TX, Tucker GA, White Plains NY, Tulsa and Northeastern OK, and until recently, on her farm in Porum, OK; where she and her husband Gary Drake, the love of her life for 57 years, raised organic flowers, created beautiful gardens and fields for the sustenance of the earth, and provided a loving home for all weary four-legged (and sometimes two-legged) travelers who showed up on their doorstep. Mary, throughout her studies in public school and the University of Redlands, CA, was a straight-A student, wrote for the school paper, sang in the choir and glee club and was always surrounded with friends and family who admired and loved her dearly. Starting at an early age, Mary paved a career path for herself through hard work, keen intelligence, and stubborn determination to contribute to her immediate and extended family’s support and to her community. Her compassion for and ability to connect with others, and her creative, intuitive sense of what a person needs in their home and place, supported her success as an award-winning realtor and broker. Mary was a prolific writer of poetry, essays and stories of everyday life, introspective musings, remembrances of growing up on Beaver Mountain and love poems to her husband, Gary. She drew upon her insatiable curiosity in all things great and small, her faith in God, and her deep love for family, people (she never met a stranger), nature, pets, music, history, and family genealogy to weave her experiences and observations into paintings, writings and storytelling for all who were lucky enough to read them or listen as she told her tales with a twinkle in her eye and a joyful lilt in her voice. From a very early age, Mary nurtured a wonder and appreciation for music. She uplifted all who were fortunate enough to hear her sing and instilled the power of and love for music into her four children and grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ivas and Fern Underwood, and her dear brothers Mike and Tim Underwood.

She is survived by the love of her life Gary L. Drake, her devoted children; Jack Drake (Rose), Virginia Drake, Rev. Susan Drake (Julie), Gary Drake (Greg), her brother Wayne Underwood (Kay), her sister Elizabeth Self, as well as seven grandchildren; Jeremiah, Laura, Jill, Audrey, Graciela, Sarah and Andrew, and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 10 A.M. Wednesday, Dec 28th, 2022 at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel at 5111 S. Memorial Drive in Tulsa, OK with Reverend Susan Drake and Reverend Julie Jennings officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Carter Davis and Davis Family Funeral Home & Crematory – Walker Brown Chapel.
