Robe is survived by his wife, Susan, sons Jason and David, grandson Austin, granddaughters Carter and Maddeline, along with step-children Dean Simmons (wife Jennifer), Tresha Aschenbrener (husband Danny) and step-grandchildren Sabrina Simmons-Glenn (husband Blake) and Braden Simmons. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Bettina, loving brother and sisters, Phil Wells (wife Debbie) and family, C.J. McAlester and family and Davie Ann Garcia (husband Sonny) and family. There are also a host of cousins, nephews and nieces he loved dearly.
His family moved to Oklahoma City where Robert attended Sequoyah Elementary, Taft Jr. High and Northwest Classen High School, graduating in 1965. Robert served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1966 and was assigned in 1968 to the 46 Americal Division, ChuLai, Vietnam. He suffered from several ailments due to his service but was always and forever proud to serve the country he loved. Returning to the U.S., Robe attended OSU and worked for several companies until being hired by Southwestern Bell, where he retired after 20 years. He began with SBC at the downtown location and was finally able to secure an outdoor position where he was “not pinned in” and remained until very close to his retirement. As God blessed both Robe and Susan with early age retirement, they were able to travel and visit close friends and family for many years until health issues interfered. His favorite travel spots were the Western states or Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee, always driving the back roads when possible with their 4-wheel drive to see what was in store for them around the next corner. Being the youngest of six, and his mother one of 11, Robert’s extended family was very large and extremely close. During the past 30 plus years, a reunion campout has been held each year on Father’s Day weekend in the Oklahoma ghost town of Bromide. 60 to 100 plus family members gathered on the empty town square with everything from pup tents to extreme RVs. Robe deeply loved his family and looked forward to this with anticipation each year. There was always a fire pit to be built and he was usually the first one up and the designated “fire starter.” There was never a cross word between anyone and “greeting” hugs and “goodbye” hugs were a requirement.Robert’s
remains will be buried next to his dad at the Tulsa Memorial
Cemetery at a later time.
