Vernon Max Costner, 76, lifelong Guymon resident, passed away Thursday afternoon, May 25, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
The son of Glenn Vernon and Nora Jean (Osborne) Costner he was born October 21, 1946 in Guymon. Vernon attended school in Guymon, graduating with the Class of 1964, he then attended college at OPSU, and in 1966 served in the US Army. Vernon was a country and western musician and band member of several groups, including Johnny Western Band, Roy D and the country people, Joan Rhinard and the country stars, Cliff Crawford, The Canadian Sweethearts and Wynn Steward. His numerous bands included, Bobby Carl and the Silverbell Cowboys and Copenhagen. He was a retired field engineer operator with ANR Pipeline, worked as a field clerk and heavy equipment operator with Oklahoma Dept. of Transportation, retiring in 2015.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Costner, brother, Gary Costner, and stepfather, Willie Scott.
Survivors include his mother, Nora Jean Scott of Senatobia, MS, special partner of 13 years, Judith McCaslin of Mangum, Oklahoma, sister, Phyllis Powell of Senatobia, brother, David Costner and wife, Donna of Colorado. Survivors also include daughter, Katie Davis and husband, Tommy of Andrews, Texas, son, Vernon Max Costner II of Guymon, daughter, Veronica Martinez of Moore, Oklahoma, son, Justin Costner and wife, Jennifer of Guymon, ten grandchildren: Gabby, Jaxson, Alex Andrea, Tristan, Layton, Adain, Camilla, Kiser, Jerry and TJ, 11 great grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Family visitation will be Friday evening, June 2nd between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. at the Bunch - Roberts Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, June 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at the First Assembly of God with Bill Newman officiating. Interment with U.S. Army Military Honors will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery. Services are entrusted to the Bunch – Roberts Funeral Home of Guymon.
