Eddie Dee Brines
August 15, 1920 - July 22, 2017
Eddie Dee Brines of Apache, OK
Was born August 15, 1920 in Empire, OK to Robert Luther and Freda (Wilkerson) Brines. He passed away July 22nd in Lawton, OK at the age of 96.
Eddie Brines wasn't a man ever content to stand still. While many may remember him best as the sheriff in Roberts County, TX, where he served four terms and retired in 1985 at the age of 65, Eddie had more jobs than seems possible for one person's lifetime. Before he became sheriff he was a deputy, and also held jobs in security, as a ranch hand and rodeo performer, a peanut farmer, a cotton picker, a milkman, a mechanic, and he ran a cafe.
His hobby list was even more extensive. Eddie enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, singing, playing the fiddle, and treasure hunting. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren remember days spent out in grandpa's lawn, chasing after grasshoppers to use as bait on the end of their fishing poles and hours spent in the garden collecting watermelons, squash, and okra that would later be pickled and eaten with dinner.
He was always chasing after treasure with one of several metal detectors he had over his lifetime, and was particularly on the lookout for the caches of Jesse James. Eddie never did find much treasure, but always enjoyed the hunt.
Among his family, Eddie had a reputation as something of a lady's man. He was married to his wife Daisy Ann Reagan for 57 years before she passed away, and was later remarried to Goldie Hughes in 1999. The two of them lived in Comanche, OK until Goldie passed away in 2009, and Eddie moved to Apache. There, he met and married Bernice Gustin Willcox in 2010. They were married until her death in 2013.
Eddie was also a man dedicated to his country and communities, as a soldier and later a member of law enforcement. He served in the US Army during World War 2, and was a member of the American Legion where he was about to receive his 60 year membership certificate, and a Life Member of the VFW. Eddie was an inspiration to many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who also chose to serve, in the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
