TAHLEQUAH — John Harvey Vance, 76, husband of Ann Vance, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Ky.
Mr. Vance was born in Sallisaw on Feb. 4, 1935, to Irving and Mary Vance.
John was a successful business entrepreneur, owning and operating several companies in Chicken Creek on Lake Tenkiller near Cookson, where he spent most of his life before relocating to Richmond, Ky. While in Richmond, John was employed by Westwood Contractors Inc. out of Fort Worth, Texas, as a construction superintendent and became an avid coin collector, owning Coin Masters of Richmond.
John was known to his family as "the prince of our hearts," and to many people who knew him, "a giant among men." He was deeply loved, respected and will terribly be missed.
In addition to his wife, Ann, he is survived by sons Tony Vance (Deborah), Johnathan Vance (Sheila), Kyle Vance (Amber), Billy McBride (Liz), Mike Vance, Bret Miller, John Glover, Chris Glover and Doug McAlister; daughters Kim Harp (Richard), Naomi Walters, Charlotte Muniz, Allie Vance, Tamarah Johnson, and Sharon McBride. He was also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughters Shelia McBride and Tamara McBride.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Oklahoma at the family cemetery.
To my wife and children, from John Vance:
"Lay Me Down Gently"
Shed not a tear for me, when you once touched my cheek, 'tis my soul that is strong, was my body that grew weak.
Try each day to remember words from my heart, that I tried to share as I cast my part.
Failures and triumphs were a part of my life, by facing these forces I learned to survive.
Forgive my shortcomings, as they've ended at last, don't let them linger on Earth as my past.
Remember good character, values and worth, our souls need these strengths to begin their rebirth.
Show me your smile so I'll know all is well, and I'll see you in heaven for this Earth became hell.
Now lay me down gently as you put me to rest, in God's loving care to at last sleep my best.
