Sue was born October 1, 1909 in Lima, Oklahoma and she passed away March 19, 2006 in Bakersfield, California.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband, Harry 'Jean' Nuzum; son, Steven 'Doc' Nuzum; daughters, Emalou Porter and Jean Ann Stevens.
She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Hanson of Manassas, Virginia; son, Michael Nuzum of Bakersfield, California; her special pet, 'George'; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and special friends at First Presbyterian Church and Spruce Gardens.
In her long and productive life, Sue's last years were filled with reading, crossword puzzles and spending time with family. Upon moving to Bakersfield in 1959, she and her husband Gene joined First Presbyterian Church. She was active with Clipper Club, Anchors and Orcas Circle until her health limited these activities. Simple pleasure of playing 'tiles' or a game of Skipbo with numerous friends, children, grandchildren or great grandchildren brought smiles and strong memories of her love for table games, fair play and laughing at herself. Her good nature was well known by all who came to know her, but anyone who played games with her also recognized they better not win too often or they would encounter that look only she can give! Animals had a special place in her heart and life. Her beloved 'George' and all the dogs at Spruce Gardens gathered near her chair while she listened to Books on Tape.
Sue's strong faith in Jesus Christ offered a quiet optimistic outlook and source of strength throughout her long vital years. Her attitude and the way she conversed with people reminded all of us to be thankful. She accepted things as they were. Sue was a survivor with an amazing faith that became stronger after she outlived three of her children.
Spending time in Cayucos, California brought pleasure to the many simple routines. She was a gift and joy to all who knew her. She really cared for others more than herself. Always proud and independent, she maintained her own home until a year ago when she moved to Spruce Gardens. Time with staff and adopted 'sisters' was a good time together. They shared many moments talking about a variety of challenges and problems. They became close as they lived together and she inspired them all.
