John Matt Butler

John Matt Butler was born September 7, 1857 in Macoupin County, Illinois.

At the age of nine years he moved with his parents to Hickory County, Missouri.

At the age of 18 he went to southwest Texas working with cattle most of the time.

On October 12, 1882 he was married to Charity Ellen Crow, who departed this life March 16, 1914. To this union were born eleven children, four having preceded to the Great Beyond while yet in infancy and childhood.

On October 30, 1891 he moved with his family to Chickasaw county living there four years and moving to Custer County, Oklahoma December 4, 1896. After living there eight years moved to Roger Mills County Oklahoma March 6, 1905 at which place he has lived until his death June 14, 1928 at the age of 70 years 9 months and 7 days.

He was converted and united with the Methodist Church South near Custer City, Oklahoma about 1898.

On June 7, 1928 he was taken ill with appendicitis and was taken to the Standifer Hospital for an operation and was doing nicely until June 14, 1928 when, owing to heart failure he passed out of this world of sorrow.

He leaves to mourn his loss seven children, Walter and Melvin of Rankin; William of Nampa, Idaho; Ray of Portland, Oregon; and Alva of Pampa, Texas; Mrs. Della Inselman of Nampa, Idaho; and Mrs. Rada McBride of Canadian, Texas.

He also leaves seven brothers and sisters, R. W. Butler, E. W. Butler, C. E. Butler, Henriett Gillis, Garfield Butler, Claud Butler and Daisy P. Pray; besides nineteen grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

He was buried in the White Rose Cemetery, of Rankin, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma with Rev. Joseph Snarr officiating.
