Lance Henry Brown

Lance Henry Brown was born May 28, 1906, in Oklahoma Territory near what later became Strong City in Roger Mills County.

He died in Elk City on Thursday April 29, 1999 at the age of 92 years and 11 months.

His parents were early day pioneers, William Tyler Brown and Fannie Sing Brown.

His dad made the run into Oklahoma in the opening of the Cheyenne-Arapaho strip in 1893. The land he obtained is still owned by family members.

Lance's first job, as soon as he was able to ride a trusty horse, was herding cattle in the unfenced country because some land was being planted to crops. This was a very lonely job, but developed in him a strong love for the land, the people and their way of life, and the wide open spaces of the range.

All his working years were spent on the land or working with rural people in agriculture related endeavors.

He worked some thirty years for the Farmers' Home Administration, mainly in Roger Mills, Beckham, and Kay counties.

He graduated from Strong City High School and Hill's Business College in Oklahoma City and attended A&M College in Stillwater.

He was a lifelong reader and learner, but did not finish college. Because of this, he was especially proud that all five of his children did graduate from either OU or OSU, most of them with advanced degrees.

Lance was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a dedicated visitor of the "Homebound Buddies" group who visit and minister at nursing homes, and the hospitalized.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Johnnie, Billie and Othello.

He was married to Aileen Wilmeth in Norman, Oklahoma on April 26, 1941.

She and their five children survive him, Dorothy Jo Machat and her husband, Rachid, of Paris, France; John H. Brown and his wife, Melissa of Edmond, Oklahoma; Betty Ripley of Norman, Oklahoma; Marilyn Coates and her husband, Victor of Ponca City, Oklahoma; and Don D. Brown of Woodward, Oklahoma. He is also survived by a niece, Melba Brown of Elk City; and another niece, Juanita Williams of Russell, Kansas.

Funeral services were at Martin's Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, with the Reverend Alan Raunge officiating.

Burial followed in the Strong City Cemetery, Strong City, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.
