Steven Schmidt was born November 3, 1914, the third child of Julius and Marie Kovar Schmidt, near Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He passed from this life June 15, 1999, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 12 days in White Creek, Davidson County, Tennessee.
Steven was born on his parents' homestead located about three miles east and south of the Cheyenne Golf Course.
His father died when Steven was four years old.
His mother sold the homestead and bought a farm near Carpenter, Oklahoma and lived there ten years before buying a farm near Roll, Oklahoma.
Steven lived in Oklahoma all of his life except the spring and summer months of the late 30's when he and two brothers went to Oregon to work. He was a dedicated farmer from the word GO.
He met Alma Butler and married in 1940.
The first half of 1940, he and Alma went to Oregon. Then they made their home in the Roll/Crawford community for the remainder of their married life. To them were born three children, one daughter, died at birth; two sons, Douglas of Nashville, Tennessee; and Donald Neal of Crawford, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Michele King, Scott Schmidt, Rae Lynn Schmid and Sterling Schmidt; and three great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; daughter; and sister.
He leaves three brothers, Isaac of Sayre, Oklahoma; John of Donald, Oregon; and Paul of Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
Steven was a member of the Church of Christ of Crawford, then went to the Cheyenne Church of Christ later in life.
He will always be remembered in the Roll/Crawford communities as a person that helped anyone that asked.
He sang at many funerals, helped hand dig many graves, served as a pall bearer and many times a combination of the three. Asked one time about how many funerals he had helped with and his answer was that he had over two hundred cards and there were many that he didn't save the cards in his early days. He enjoyed heping take care of the Silent Home Cemetery.
A memorial service was held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 18, 1999 at the Cheyenne Church of Christ officiated by Ray Don Jackson.
Interment will be in the Silent Home Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
