Josephine Smithey Salter

Josephine Smithey Salter was born on October 17, 1898, in Camden, Missouri, the younger of two daughters of Hiram and Eliza Kate Smithey.

The family moved to Hammon in 1910.

She attended the public schools of Hammon graduating from the high school.

After earning her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Oklahoma, she did graduate work at Oklahoma A&M.

She taught school for a total of 18 years, and worked for the State Department of Public Welfare for 16 years.

On November 1, 1930 she was married to E. P. Salter in Cordell, Oklahoma. No children were born to this union.

On April 7, 1955, she died of a heart attack in Oklahoma City.

She is survived by her husband, E. P. Salter; her sister, Elsie Shults; two great nieces, two great nephews and a host of friends.

She was in charge of welfare work in Greer county at the time of her death.

Burial in Red Hill Cemetery, Hammon.
