Houston M. Cope was born May 21, 1893 in Jadwin, Missouri and departed this life Friday, August 29 at Community Hospital in Elk City at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 8 days.
He came to Oklahoma Territory in 1898 and homesteaded in the Foss and Weatherford areas.
He worked several years for the Chickasha Milling Company and the P.G. Newkirk Grain Company then he worked some forty years for the Kimbell Milling Company. He managed the grain elevators at Hammon, Moorewood, Herring and Woodward until his retirement in 1976.
Mr. Cope was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Hammon.
He accepted Christ as a young man and lived an exemplary Christian life before his family and friends.
Mr. Cope was married to Minnie Birdwell in 1914 and she preceded him in death in 1924. He was then married to Ada Taylor in 1927 and she preceded him in death in 1940.
He married Aline Morgan on April 11, 1942, in Elk City and she survives him.
Other survivors include three daughters, Fern Allen of Chickasha; Linda Dodson of Hammon; and Mary Ann Troncales of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Fanny Cope and Pearl Norton, both of Weatherford; also ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gentry and Mary Lucinda Cope; two brothers, Peirce and Clarence Cope; and one son, Francis Cope.
The funeral was held at the First Baptist Church, Hammon.
Burial was at the Red Hill Cemetery, Hammon, Roger Mills County on September 1, 1980.
