James Buford Ackley was born July 17, 1935, in Hammon to Boots and Jean Ackley.
He grew up in Hammon and graduated from Hammon High School. When he graduated, he went to work for Santa Fe Railway.
He later married Dorothy Jane Devin.
He enjoyed all the travel and the many wonderful people he met along the way working for Santa Fe.
After enjoying working for Santa Fe, he had his own welding and oilfield business.
He returned back to Santa Fe Railway and retired from there.
He moved to Amarillo to be close to his children.
He went to work for Plains Transportation until health problems would no longer allow him to work.
James enjoyed watching PBR on television and buying and selling used farm equipment.
He loved being "Pap" to all the grandkids and greatgrandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carroll Wayne Miller.
Survivors include his daughter, Sharla Jane Trimble and husband Archie of Amarillo; a son, James Buford Ackley Jr. and wife Melynda of Amarillo; a special daughter, Jennifer Kerstetter and husband Doug of Protection, Kansas; four granddaughters, Jaime Stoll and Leigha Trimble, both of Amarillo; Jamie Brogden of Briscoe; and Kyleigh Bartlett of Canadian; five grandsons, Shawn Ackley of Corinth; J.R. Ackley, Adam Ramos and Aaron Ramos, all of Amarillo; and T. J. Trimble of Sayre, Oklahoma; and many greatgrandchildren and numerous friends.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Brian Mashburn officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:00 p.m. Friday in Red Hill Cemetery in Hammon, Oklahoma with Leon Tomberlin officiating.
The family suggests memorials be High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo, Texas 79114-7448; or the Red Hill Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 332, Hammon, Oklahoma 73650.
