Harriet Shanda © The Hammon Advocate 24 April 1913 Submitted by: Leila Evett
Harriett Shanda, age 69 years, departed this life April 14, 1913.
Grandma was stricken with paralysis seven months ago and lay helpless during her entire sickness.
She was married in 1865 to Sidney Shanda and theirs was an agreeable union. There were born unto them five children of which three survive her and were present at her death.
Grandma embraced Christ in her youth and lived a practical Christian life during her lifetime.
Her body was laid to rest in the Kiowa Cemetery, but her spirit to God who gave it, waiting on that reserve prepared by Him until That voice shall say come up higher.
Short religious services were held at home and at the cemetery. Song at home, "God Be with You, Till We Meet Again," subject of remarks at cemetery, "Why need this body died, or Necessity of Resurrection" and song "Shall we Gather At The River?"
Grandma left us at death with that smile she had always met us with in life, and was ever a bride of youth unto her buried husband and a jewel unto her bereaved children. May God help us {as the song sang} to gather at the river.
There are no stones identified as Harriett and Sidney Shanda {at Kiowa Cemetery} but it is believed two unidentified stones belong to them.
On 24 September 1901, Sidney Shandy made application #20,304 for homestead in Section 1, Twp 13N, R 22 WIM. Final Certificate 3847 dated 22 April 1905.
