A rock thrown by a dynamite blast in Idaho Falls, Idaho on August 30, 1964 killed a construction worker in a sanitary sewer project.
Dick Harris, died in surgery in Idaho Falls hospital about 2:00 p.m. He had been taken to the hospital after the blast at 10:30 a.m.
Harris was one of two persons near the blast. The other man was Gary Richardson, 28 who did not see the accident but found Harris unconscious immediately after the blast.
According to hospital attendants, Harris did not regain consciousness.
George Hartwell, a contractor who employed Harris, suggested the accident occurred because of a premature explosion.
Richardson told Idaho Falls police investigating the accident that the charge was the same size as the pair had been using in earlier blasts.
Harris was struck on the right side of his head.
Hugh Winston "Dick" Harris was born June 24, 1922, at Durham, Oklahoma, the son of Walter E. and Eula
Sloan Harris.
He resided in Oklahoma until 1963 when he moved to Kansas.
He was married to Montez Walker on May 1, 1955. They came to Idaho Falls in 1960.
Besides his wife he is survived by his son, Richard Lyn Harris seven weeks old, a son by a previous marriage; Hugh Wesley Harris; and a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Frances Ann Nichols, both of Cheyenne, Oklahoma.
He is also survived by one brother, Cliff Harris of Boise, Idaho; one sister, Mrs. Walter Hensen of Idaho Falls; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Harris of Cheyenne.
Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Idaho Falls.
