Mary Jane Lowry Rogers © Sayre Daily Headlight Journal 25 May 1909 Submitted by: Wanda Purcell
Last Saturday, March 20, 1909, at the residence of Dr. Dewitt Stone, on Fourth street, Sayre, Oklahoma, Mrs. Mary Jane Rogers died. The funeral services were conducted at the grave by her pastor, Brother Seaton of the Methodist church, assisted by the Christian minister, Elder Weaver.
The subject of this notice was born in Mississippi, June 29, 1843 and was married to Mr. Franklin Rogers, January 10, 1861. Nine children, three sons and six daughters, were born to them, eight of them are still living.
It is said by those who knew her best that she was one of the purest and most universally loved women in the community in which she lived. She was one of the most devoted mothers. Even after her children were all grown, she was as tender and affectionate as when they were little children around her feet. The deep emotion and keen sorrow manifested at the grave by her children attest this fact.
One of the highest tributes to the life of this noble woman which the writer has heard was by Dr. Stone, who remarked, as we were nearing the cemetery, "In that casket lies one of the best women I ever knew."
She was from early life a devout Christian and a member of the Methodist church to the time of her death.
But the history of such a pure and unselfish life cannot be compressed into the short space allotted me. It would require volumes. Suffice it to say that she is gone while the Saviour of her good name remains. She peacefully sleeps beneath the sod where she will rest on unmindful of praise through the passing of revolving years, awaiting the resurrection of the just.
Burial took place in Mulberry cemetery.
