Cal Rowland Submitted by: Leila Evett
Cal Rowland, husband of Josephine Bruner was working on the Herring Ranch just south of Washita River when he was murdered. No one was ever brought to trial so his death remains a mystery. He and Josephine were the parents of the following chidlren:
May married Lee Walters
Virginia married W. W. Walkup
Sidney married Marie Funderburg
Sibbie Nell married Jessie Lee Bogges
Lola married Emmett Johnson
Ruth married Harvey Hunter
Callie (born after Cal's death) married Joe Walker
On the 12 November 1900, Josie Rowland filed for homestead on the NE 1/4 of Section 22, Twp 13N, R 21 WIM.
Exact date of Cal Rowlan's death is not known. The Hammon Advocate, 3 July 1947 under the Kiowa News is quoted below:
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Rowland, Mr. and Mrs. Burr, Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham and familes called on friends and enjoyed a picnic on big Kiowa Sunday. Mr. Rowland was reared in this vicinity. his father, the late Cal Rowland, was the third person to be buried in the Kiowa Cemetery.
Since George V. Lacey was the second person buried on 12 May 1899 and Charley Eakins was buried 5 December 1899, it would place Cal's death sometime between the two dates.
