John Lee “Johnny Mc” McDaniel, 79, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17,
2026, at the home of his son in Edmond, Oklahoma. A devoted husband, father,
grandfather, and community leader, John leaves behind a rich legacy of hard
work, adventure, and service.
Born on March 8, 1947, in Cheyenne, Oklahoma, John was the son of the late Eddie
Lee and Clesta Cozette (Davis) McDaniel. He grew up in Cheyenne, attending
Cheyenne Elementary and High School, where he excelled on the basketball court
and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He went on to attend Southwestern Oklahoma
State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.
John was a man of diverse talents and boundless work ethic. Having learned the
trade in his father’s grocery store, he worked as a butcher during and after his
college years. Following his honorable service in the National Guard, John
joined the Dobson Telephone Company. He quickly became the right-hand man to
Russell Dobson—even earning his pilot’s license to fly the company’s private
plane. An entrepreneur at heart, John leased and later purchased the beloved
local staple, "Johnny Mc’s Food ‘n Fuel." Over the decades, he also poured his
heart into the land, slowly building a significant and enduring farming and
ranching operation in Roger Mills County.
Deeply committed to his roots, John gave back to his community in numerous ways,
notably playing an instrumental role in helping the Washita Battlefield Site
achieve National Historic status. He was an avid golfer at the Elk City Country
Club and cherished hunting and fishing trips with lifelong friends. In later
years, while never fully retiring, John and his wife, Becky, moved to Florida.
There, he took his fishing skills to the ocean and channeled his competitive
spirit into pickleball, winning and medaling in dozens of tournaments.
John’s greatest joy, however, was his family.
He is survived by his beloved wife
of Cheyenne, Becky Lynn (Wylie) McDaniel; his son, Zachary Lee McDaniel; his
cherished grandchildren, Zara and Jennings McDaniel, all of Edmond, Oklahoma;
and his brother, Jim McDaniel of Elk City, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and his sister Sharon Kay (McDaniel) Youngblood.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Beverly Zirkle, Robert Norris, and
Jill McDaniel for their exceptional care, kindness, and support.
Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at the First
Baptist Church of Cheyenne, Oklahoma with interment for close friend and family
at the Cheyenne Cemetery.
If you would like to donate flowers, the family has chosen a crimson and cream
motif. As an alternative to floral gifts, the family requests that memorial
donations be made in John’s honor to the US Senior Pickleball Foundation to
support the sport he grew to love.
