Residents of the Doxey and Berlin communities are mourning the death of Francis Asberry Chappell, 71, prominent business man of those villages, which occurred last week.
The aged man operated mercantile stores at Berlin and Doxey for the past nine years.
Funeral services were held at the Doxie School building, land on which this structure is located was donated to the district by Mr. Chappell.
In charge of the final rites were Rev. Rhoten, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church of Doxey, and Rev. Perry, Methodist Church minister of Berlin. The latter officiated in the services by a wish of Mr. Chappell. The Rev. Mr. Perry and Mr. Chappell were friends of long standing.
He had been ill for 16 months prior to his death.
Immediate survivors are his widow, and nine children, two brothers and two sisters all of whom were at his bedside at the time he passed away.
He was born May 24, 1860 in Corveta County, Georgia.
He was married to Miss Ersula Kate Ferguson July 22, 1889, at Hillsboro, Texas.
Children surviving are eight daughters and one son, W. H. Chappell of Berlin; Mrs. Mary Nebbut of Durham; Mrs. Lillie Winkleblack, Mrs. Jessie Mathews, Mrs. Roxoma Beck, all of Berlin; Mrs. Ruth Reagan of Mountain View; Mrs. Versa Galvin of Los Angeles, California; and Francis and Lureline of Doxey.
Interment was made in the Berlin Cemetery, Berlin, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.
Pallbearers were J. B. Wingo of Berlin; W.O. Gibbs of Elk City; Bert Sapp, Riley Martin and W. L. Hughes of Doxey.
The funeral services were held in the auditorium of the Doxey school building which was built on land given to the school by the deceased.
The services were opened by Rev. Rhoton of Doxey Methodist church reading a scripture lesson and the obituary. Rev. Perry, pastor of Berlin Methodist church preached the funeral, he having resided near the deceased some thirty years ago at Hollis, Oklahoma. Mrs. Chapell requested that he conduct the funeral services.
Interment was made in the Berlin cemetery, Berlin, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.
The floral offerings were very beautiful.
Mr. Chappell had been in the mercantile business for the past nine years at Berlin and at Doxey, Oklahoma and has many friends as he was always honest and upright in his dealings.
The pall bearers were J. B. Wingo, W. O. Gibbs, Bill Maddux, Bert Sapp, Riley Martin and W. L. Hughes.
