Funeral services for Opal Lavada (Buchanan) Goheen, 89, resident of Austin, TX will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 2:00 PM in Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel, Hugo, Oklahoma with Pastor Colby Bryant officiating.

Interment will be in Rattan Cemetery.

 
Mrs. Goheen passed away March 15, 2013 at Christopher House in Austin, TX. She was the beloved wife of Paul Eldridge Goheen for 59 years. She was born in Spencerville, OK to James Walter Buchanan and Allie T. Priest Buchanan. She had two older brothers, Coy Buchanan and Glenn Buchanan and a younger sister, Irmadine Morehead Casey. All have preceded her in death. Mrs. Goheen was raised around her grandparents John Andrew Priest and Belle Rae Milam Priest as well as grandparents Martha Boen and Benjamin F. Buchanan. She had many first cousins and spoke fondly of her early years in the area. She was proud, smart, creative, humorous and fun to be around. She was also a dedicated, wife, mother and grandmother. While her husband was in World War II she moved to Richmond, CA with her parents, young daughter, and sister to work in the shipyards. She was 5€™ and weighed 100 lbs. and small enough to work in the smoke stacks of the war ships welding which is what she did. She was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters". After the War she and Paul spent many years in WA State where he worked on dams. He later moved back to Stillwater, OK and he worked for 15 years for the US Postal Service.

Opal will be dearly missed by her daughter, Carolyn J. Thomas and husband, Douglas of The Hills, TX and her grandchildren Michael (Joanne) Thomas of Dripping Springs, TX; Faith (Franco) Cuminato of Oak Hill, TX; Tom Goheen of Norman, OK; Dan Goheen of Bartlesville, OK; Julie Whitlow of Houston, TX; Bryan Whitlow of Houston, TX; great grandchildren, Aurianne, Jacob and Ryan Thomas; and Isabella, Emma and Sarah Cuminato all of Texas. Also missing her will be Gloria Goheen of Bartlesville, OK and many other beloved family.

Opal was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son, Wayne Lee Goheen of Barlesville, OK; and daughter, Janice Kay Whitlow of Arlington, TX.
