Former Duncan High School athletic legend, James (Jim) Underwood, 73, of Antlers, Oklahoma, passed away on Saturday, November 19, in Duncan.

He was born January 6, 1943, to Victor Locke and Lila (McDonald) Underwood in Hugo. Jim is the grandson of original Choctaw enrollees, Kennedy and Lula Ashford Underwood.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 9, at 1:00 P.M. at Whitt Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation services have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.
Jim will be laid to rest on Tuesday, December 13, at 2:00 P.M. at the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma Veterans Cemetery in Tuskahoma.

Jim attended public schools in Antlers and Duncan, graduating from Duncan in 1961. He earned 12 athletic letters in football, basketball and baseball during his high school time. He was selected for All-Boomer Conference while attending high school. He attended college on an athletic scholarship at Henderson County Junior College, now Trinity Valley Junior College, at Athens, Texas and Trinity University in San Antonio, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Residential Construction. He was selected as Distinguished Alumnus in 2003. In 2010, he was elected to the Duncan High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He also served as an athletic scout for Trinity Valley Junior College.
After college, Jim joined the Navy and in 1971 was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant, having served as a pilot and traffic control officer. He then went to work in the construction business in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Following a partnership in a framing and remodeling firm, Jim started the Choctaw Fence Company in Arlington. Jim named the company after his late father and his Choctaw heritage. After he became ill in 2008, he could no longer work in the construction business.

Jim is survived by his brother, Vic Underwood, Jr. and his special friend, Athelta Harmon, of Antlers; his sisters, Joyce Daniels and Glenna Cash and her fiancé, Kye Herbert, both of Duncan; many nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Anita Richardson, of Duncan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jerri Burton; his sister-in-law, Faye Underwood; and his brother-in-law, James H. Daniels.
