Robert Douglas “Bob” Mayo, 68, lifelong resident of Tecumseh, Oklahoma passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017, at his home.
He was born April 25th, 1949 to Herman Mayo and Maxine (Smith) Mayo in Purcell, Oklahoma.
Bob was raised in Tecumseh and attended Tecumseh Public Schools. He graduated class with the class of 1967 from Tecumseh High School.
Bob began his career in Law Enforcement by serving as Assistant Chief of Police for the Tecumseh Police Department. After leaving the Tecumseh Police Department he served as Lead Investigator for the Pottawatomie and Lincoln County District Attorney’s office. He left the DA’s office to pursue what he would later find to be his calling; which was to teach. He was the Law Enforcement Program Instructor at Mid-America Technology Center for the next 23 years. After his retirement from teaching, he began work as the Facilities Supervisor with the Tecumseh Public School system. Bob was known for finding a way to make things that seemed impossible happen with what appeared to be little effort.
He was an active member of the Tecumseh High School Alumni Association and had previously served as both a board member and board President for the Tecumseh School Board. Bob loved working with kids and enjoyed coaching little league baseball for many years. Bob loved music and was a self-professed steering wheel keyboard and dashboard drumming professional.
Bob was preceded in death by his mother Maxine Mayo, and his father Herman Mayo.
Bob is survived by 2 daughters and 2 sons-in-law, Laurie and Chad Hicks of Washington, OK; Sarah and Tommy Carter of Tecumseh, OK; and a son, Doug Mayo of Tecumseh, OK; he had 4 grandchildren; Katelyn and Hayden Hicks of Washington, OK; and Timothy and Savannah Carter of Tecumseh, OK; and is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Charles Werchen of Harrah, OK; as well as too many other friends and loved ones to mention. Bob is also survived by the many students that he taught throughout the years, as he considered them “his kids”.
Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017. The Family will gather on Friday between 5:00 and 7:00 at Cooper Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please make donations to the Tecumseh Alumni Association.
Service will be held at 10:00 on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Tecumseh Alumni Building on the High School Campus, at 901 N 13th Street, Tecumseh. Burial will follow at the Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.
