Joe E. Johnson, 88, of Shawnee, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, February 8, 2018 at his home.
He was born September 1, 1929 to Robert Alexander and Lottie Bell (Miller) Johnson in Konawa, Oklahoma.
Joe was raised in St. Louis, Oklahoma and attended grade school at Cherry Hill and was a 1947 graduate of St. Louis High School.
He married Jimmie Nell Sharp on April 2, 1947 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on March 14, 2005.
Joe was a member of Tecumseh Pentecostal Church of God. In the early 1950’s he was issued his Extorters License to preach the gospel with the Assemblies of God Oklahoma District. In 1952 he was ordained with The Pentecostal Church of God for whom he later served as Oklahoma District Youth Director. When asked what his calling was he would always answer “To do what was needed at the time.” Joe along with his wife traveled the State with church youth groups and helped design and build many start up churches including the Evangelistic Center.
Joe served as Mayor for the City of Tecumseh, served on the Planning Commission and as a City Councilman. He also served on the Tecumseh School Board.
Joe was a home builder by trade and built numerous homes and nursing homes throughout the state. He loved the outdoors and had a passion for hunting and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie Johnson; son, Jimmy “Corky” Johnson; his parents, Robert and Lottie Johnson; 3 brothers and 4 sisters; and sister-in-law, Juanita VanAntwerp.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Jim Kinnamon of Shawnee, OK; daughter-in-law, Sherry Johnson of Concord, NC; 4 grandsons, Brent Johnson of Harrisburg, NC, Eric and Beth Johnson of Monroe, NC, Kraig Sexton of Midlothian, TX and Chance and Mary Kinnamon of Alamogordo, NM; 2 granddaughters, Amber and Tim Crook of Shawnee, OK and Angela Beeson of Lawton, OK; 2 great-grandchildren, Emma Johnson and Zachary Johnson; and many loving friends and extended family.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 12, 2018 and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2018. Family Gathering to greet friends and family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, February 12, 2018 at Cooper Funeral Home. Graveside Service will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Tecumseh Cemetery with Reverend Fred Owens, Tecumseh Pentecostal Church of God officiating under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
