Brother Daniel Joseph Dempsey
Brother Daniel Joseph Dempsey, Order of Saint Benedict, St. Gregory's Abbey in Shawnee, died Sunday in a local nursing home at the age of 76.He was born May 16, 1922, in Springfield, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph and Katherine Dempsey.
He attended school in Meriden, Connecticut, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II from October 1942 to January 1946. He served in the European Theater of Operations in the military police and received three battle stars.
He received a bachelor's degree in social science and history in 1951 from Fairfield University in Connecticut. He studied theology at St. Louis University School of Divinity during 1967 and 1968 and earned a teacher's certificate in Missouri in 1972.
He joined the Benedictine community at St. Gregory's Abbey in 1972. He made his monastic profession on October 28, 1973, and solemn monastic profession on December 27, 1978.
He worked as a mail clerk for St. Gregory's College and served as porter {receptionist} for the Abbey. He also assisted with the Abbey Library.
Brother Daniel was a longtime, active member of AA and promoted its mission of service.
His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.
He is survived by the monastic community of St. Gregory's Abbey; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Joan Dempsey; nieces and nephews, Susan and Andy Lisowski, Mike and Pam Dempsey, and Carol and David Conolly, and four great-nieces and great-nephews.
Vigil will be 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory's Abbey.
Mass of Christian resurrection will be 4 p.m. Thursday at the Abbey.
Celebrant is the Right Rev. Martin Lugo, O.S.B.
Burial will be at the Abbey Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
