Jerry Ray Garrett

Shawnee resident Jerry Ray Garrett, 72, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010 at a local hospital.

He was born March 4, 1938 to Tela Brassfield and Loy E. Garrett of Shawnee.

A life-long resident he attended Washington Elementary School, Shawnee Junior High School and graduated from Shawnee High School in 1956 where he was a proud member of the Shawnee High School band.

He grew up attending and being an active member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Royal Ambassadors at Calvary.

At the time of his death he was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and proud to be a member of the Senior Jesus Heirs Choir.

As a young man he was employed by Modern Motors of Shawnee. His love for customizing cars led him to be an organizing member of the Apostle Car Club where he participated in many annual car club events and shows as attested to by his many trophies and awards.

He worked as an aircraft mechanic for several years at Tinker Field Air Force Base. Later Jerry took a job at Trans World Airlines in the aircraft engineering division in Kansas City, Missouri.

A high point in Jerry's career was when he was certified to taxi test T.W.A. aircraft.

In 1968 he was disabled in an automobile accident which complicated his life from there on, but drew him much closer to his Savior, Jesus Christ.

His sister, Bonnie Jack Wright, has lovingly cared for him for remainder of his life. A dedicated Christian, he was an inspiration to his family and friends. He loved gospel music and had numerous hobbies.

He was married to Crystal Woods in 1960 and they had one son, Gregory Ray Garrett, whom he loved very much and became the pinnacle of his life.

On February 1, 2008 he was married to Thelma Quattlebaum Knoles.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Loy and Tela Garrett and a brother-in-law, Herman Joshua Jack.

He was survived by his wife, Thelma Knoles Garrett ; his son Greg and wife Joyce Garrett ; two granddaughters Chante and Rach'e Garrett all of Oklahoma City; his sister Bonnie Jack Wright and her husband Charles E. Wright; his nephew {to whom he was more like a brother} Michael Steven and wife Debbie Jack; his great nephews Stuart William Jack all of Shawnee; and Brandon Joshua Jack and great niece Lindsay Ann Jack of Norman, Oklahoma.

He will be lovingly remembered by relatives and many friends.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Walker Funeral Service Chapel with Mark Wright officiating.

Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Walker Funeral Service.
