1932 - 2014
Gerold Don Terry, 82, of Shawnee, Oklahoma, passed away February 3, 2014 in Norman, Oklahoma.He was born in Byron, Oklahoma on May 20, 1932.Don served his country during the Korean and Vietnam wars serving in the United States Army. He began his Army career in February 1953. From 1955 to 1966 he served with B Battery, 189th Field Artillery, 45th Infantry Division of the National Guard. He later joined the 95th Training Division of the Army Reserve. Service in both was based in Woodward, Oklahoma. He returned to active duty in 1966 and retired with the rank of Sergeant Major in 1987. During those years, his assignments took him to Korea, Germany, Vietnam, Hawaii, Marshall Islands, New Zealand, Australia, and several assignments in the continental US. His assignments crossed a number of fields including Engineers, Artillery, Missiles, Logistics, and Army Emergency Relief. His awards were numerous, including: Bronze Star Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, United States Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with 4th Award.Don married the love of his life, Mary Evelyn Tower in 1956. They traveled the world together and retired to Shawnee. After he moved to the VA Center, she was his constant supporter, sharing daily with him all the news and activities of those who knew and loved him.Don is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Evelyn; children, Rick and Lori Terry, Roger Terry, Kenneth Terry, Sharon and Mike Anderson, Reba and Michael Meyer; grandchildren, Monika and Rusty Myers, Katharina Ochoa; and friend Joe Conrad, Gregory and Ashley Terry, Andrew Terry, Christopher Terry, Samantha Terry, Bradley Terry, Rebekah Meyer, Stephen Meyer, Braden Meyer, and one very special great granddaughter, who loved him dearly, Aubrey Nicole Terry; and two sisters, Merlynn Perdue and husband Dave; and Doris Wokaty.Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Bill Eisenhour Funeral Home, Del City, with interment at Fairview Cemetery, Shawnee, Oklahoma.To leave your condolences, please visit Eisenhour Funeral Home or the Woodward News.
