1910 - 1997
Shawnee resident Mellie A. McDonald Hodges died Tuesday in a local nursing home. She was 87.Mrs. Hodges was born August 31, 1910, in Mena, Arkansas, the daughter of Harvey and Mary Johnson McDonald.She graduated from Wilson High School.She later attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, and the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, then called Central State Teachers College.Working for the American National Insurance Company, she later worked for the Shawnee help line and for Avon.On November 25, 1945, in Ardmore, she married John L. Hodges.Living in Shawnee most her life, she was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was active in the choir and with the Logos Children's Program. She also sang with the Hallelujah Chorus of the First Baptist Church, and was active with the Senior Citizen Center.Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, David and Wanda Hodges of Shawnee; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann Hodges and Joe Steponavic of Titusville, Florida; a stepson, John V. Hodges of San Francisco, Califorina; seven grandchildren, Travis, Wayne and Krista Hodges of Shawnee; Shirl Hodges of Nashua, New Hampshire; John V. Hodges Jr., Richard Hodges and Kimberly Gonzalez, all of California; a great-grandson, John V. Hodges III of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, three brothers and one sister.The casket will remain open at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel until 1:00 p.m. Friday.Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rusty Williams and Dr. Paul Calmes officiating.Burial will be in Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel.
