HAZEL JUANITA COPE
1924 - 2008
Shawnee resident Hazel Juanita Cogburn Cope died Wednesday, October 8, 2008, in Tecumseh at the age of 84.She was born April 8, 1924, in Coalgate, Oklahoma to Archie A. and Maggie Edith McKinney Cogburn.She was born and raised in the Coalgate area.Following her marriage, she moved to California and worked as a "grease monkey" during the war. She moved back to Oklahoma and worked as "Rosie the Riveter" at Tinker, as well as many other things involving airplanes. She then moved to the West Coast, living in Oregon where she worked as a cook and became an accomplished baker. She also lived in Washington before returning to the Shawnee area where she has lived for the past thirty years.She enjoyed arts and crafts, and loved to play cards.She was a member of the Wallace Avenue Baptist Church.She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Thelma Battles; two brothers, Floyd Cogburn and Archie Newt Cogburn; and a grandson, Christopher Beggs.Survivors include her son, R. Keith Cope of Veneta, Oregon; daughter, Connie L. Beggs of Tecumseh; grandchildren, Kimberly Claibourn, Robert Beggs, Shaun Beggs, Brian Beggs, Laura Connard, Jennifer Kvanduch, Dana Russell, Justin Nesbitt, Gerald Nesbitt and Ryan Cope; brothers and sisters, Evelyn Gianfilippo, Leo Cogburn, Wylmouth Matthews, Maxine Morrison, Phenica Shepard, Clark Cogburn, Geneva Gregory, and Phercilla Battles.Service was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Cooper Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bobby Roe officiating.Burial at Tecumseh Cemetery.
