After his outfit experienced a direct hit, Howard was the only survivor. He received a brain concussion and was unconscious for two months in a hospital in Wales. When the attending physicians decided that he was strong enough to travel, he was allowed to return stateside.

His teaching career began at Mars Hill Bible School, where he taught for two years while preaching at Mount Zion Church of Christ. In 1952, Howard and Marvell moved to Oklahoma City where he preached for the Grand Boulevard Church of Christ while preparing to move to the state of Maine. Howard taught school at Norway, Maine, for two years while he and Marvell, along with Charles and Sue Chandler, worked with the South Portland Church of Christ.

Due to health reasons, they returned to Oklahoma City after their first son, Jim, was born. Howard preached for the Britton Church of Christ during this time in Oklahoma City, and then moved to Wellington, Texas, where his second son, Jack, was born. In 1958, the Mitchells moved to Vernon, Texas, where he taught school and was the preacher for the congregation at Odell. He moved his family to the Harrah, Oklahoma, area in 1967 and taught in Shawnee, Oklahoma, until he retired in 1985 with over 30 years of experience.

Howard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marvell Mitchell of the home; one sister, Ollie of Parsons, Tennessee; two sons, Jack Mitchell of Oklahoma City, and Jim Mitchell of Chester, Virginia; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Mitchell and wife Lataria of Richmond, Virginia, Paul Mitchell and wife Megan of Edmond, Oklahoma, and Rebecca Mitchell; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, and his care-givers.
