Mr. Martin died Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born July 25, 1936 in Oklahoma City, OK to Virgil Clyde and Mary Hughes Martin.
He married Doris Barnett on March 16, 1954 in Sapulpa, OK. She preceded him in death in 1990. He later married Joan Floyd and she preceded him in death in 2012.
Mr. Martin was offered a football scholarship to the University of Arkansas but turned it down to pursue his dream as a Phillip 66 Dealer and Jobber for over 50 years. Jim’s service and gasoline stations were one of the few that provided full service during that era. You don’t see that anymore. Mr. Martin was self-employed as a bulk oil distributor for Phillips 66 and owned and managed Homer Stop & Go convenience store. Jim’s customers knew him for his “Jim-ism’s”: “Ready for the Big Day”, “One day one dollar, a million days a million dollars”, “Pick pick bird hog now?”, “Hey Big Boy”, “Not an imitation but the real thing” and the list goes on.
Jim enjoyed playing golf with his friends at Oak Hills Country Club. They called themselves, “The Rinkey Dinks.” He loved people and loved life but most of all, he loved Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior. He will be missed by many but his legacy will live on.
