Graveside services for Vesta Sanders Cooksey, 93, Ada, are 9:00 a.m. Thursday at Rosedale Cemetery, Rev. Harold Ware will officiate. A reception celebrating her life with friends and family will follow.
Mrs. Cooksey died Saturday, July 16, 2011 at a nursing home in Carmel, Indiana. She was born February 10, 1918 in Dustin, Oklahoma to John B. and Carrie Sanders. She graduated from high school and attended East Central University (formerly East Central State Teacher’s College).
She married T. J. “Bill” Cooksey in 1938. He preceded her in death December 9, 1975. Mrs. Cooksey was a seventy-plus year resident of Ada. She taught school at Big Prairie School near her hometown of Dustin, OK and later was a bookkeeper for the family service station business, Cooksey Tire and Battery. For many years, she was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ada and an active member of the Tanti Study Club and a ladies social coffee group.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally A. Cooksey, Indianapolis, IN; two sons, Laurence Cooksey, New York City, NY, and Jerry D. Cooksey and wife Sharon, Colorado Springs, CO; two granddaughters; one grandson; three great grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Hodges, Los Angeles, CA; three nieces; a nephew; and several great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Marvin Sanders; sisters, Clysta Hettingern and Blanche Monroe; and Joe P. Cooksey.
