Benny Powell, 81, of McAlester, passed away Saturday, May 6, at his home, with his family at his side. Viewing will be Monday until 8:00 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be Tuesday, May 9, at 11:00 a.m. at the Tannehill Cemetery. The family requests, in lieu of flowers and plants, memorial donations be made to the Blue 97 FOP Foundation - Danny Kelley Scholarship Fund at P.O. Box 1989, McAlester, Ok. 74502. Benny Woodrow Powell was born on May 9, 1941 in McAlester to C. W. "Chank" Powell and Marvelle (Turney) Powell. He grew up here and graduated from McAlester High School. Growing up here, Benny was active in the rodeo arena in roping, steer wrestling, and other events. After high school, he joined the U. S. Army and served one enlistment, receiving his honorable discharge. When he returned from the service, he and Reta Bowen were married on July 15, 1960. They made their home in Tannehill for many years, moving to McAlester 8 years ago. Benny had a career at the Army Ammunition Plant as a high voltage electrician until his retirement. He and Reta were avid bowlers in local bowling leagues and also enjoyed fishing, especially crappie fishing, hunting, and watching all kinds of sporting activities. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, going to their games and recitals and anything else they were involved in. He was a long-time member of the North Town Church of Christ. Benny is survived by his three daughters, Jeannie Powell, Sherrie Effinger and Bart, and Mickie Foris and Chris; five grandchildren, Joshua Effinger and Amanda, Shiann Johnson and Jake, Tyler Shann and Cherish, Masen Taylor and Ashton, and Dillon Foris; great grandchildren, Bethany Effinger, Addisyn Effinger, Rayleigh Effinger, Samuel Johnson, Mikah Johnson, Noah Johnson, and Chase Shann; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Reta, and 2 brothers, Wade Powell and Leon Ramsey.
