Donald Gene Smith, 65, of Kiowa, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at his home. The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at Bishop Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Kiowa First Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Russell officiating. Burial will be at Pryor Cemetery in Stuart. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Born July 9, 1943, in McAlester, he was the son of E. E. and Opal Anna Mitchell Smith. He grew up and attended school in Ashland, graduating from Ashland High School in 1961. The summer of 1961, he joined the United States Navy, where he served two years active duty on the USS Oklahoma City and three years in the reserves. He married Glenda Lewis on Jan. 24, 1964. He worked for the Rock Island Railroad in El Reno and Wichita, Kan., St. Mary’s Railroad in St. Mary’s, Ga., Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, and the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, retiring from there in 1987. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, racing his sand drag dune buggy, watching westerns and being with his family. Survivors include his wife, Glenda Smith, of the home; a daughter, Teresa Roberson, of McAlester; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gayla Smith, of McAlester. Also, three grandchildren, Chelsie Onderdonck, of McAlester, Cassidy Onderdonck, of McAlester, and Ty Smith, of McAlester; two great-grandchildren, Devyn and Dylan Veal, Wichita Falls, Texas (godchildren of Chelsie). And, four brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Jeanette Smith, Frisco, Texas, Jerry Smith, of Kiowa, Ronnie and Glynda Smith, Hurst, Texas, and Mike and Lovey Smith, of McAlester. And, four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lena Faye and James Coats, Terrell, Texas, Evelyn and Jack Gordon, of Atwood, Anna and W.R. Ruth, Eunice, N.M., and Linda and Sidney Young, of McAlester, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Willa Mae Trammell: a brother-in-law, Lloyd Sanford; a nephew, Kenny Young, and son-in-law, Keith Onderdonck. Pallbearers will be Larry Wilson, Terry English, Glen Coldwell, Dennis Trammell, Terry Pennington and Rusty Bartley. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Kapple, Jerry Dial, Rick Weiher and David Redman.
