Submitted by: Carol Spear Rice
Floyd Irwin Harris, son of Floyd and Essie Harris, was born in Blanco, Iowa, on February 19, 1925. Irwin passed away on March 4, 2015.
His family moved to Windyville, Missouri in 1928, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He enrolled in Bethany Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University) in 1944 and graduated in 1948, then went to Nazarene Theological Seminary, graduating in 1953.
Irwin married Doris Rose Mills on August 20, 1949. They pastored Nazarene churches in Monett, Missouri; Cleveland, Ohio; Clinton, Ohio; Ravenna, Ohio; and Columbia First Church of the Nazarene in Columbia, South Carolina. In 1966, he became Director of Endowment at Bethany Nazarene College (now SNU) and moved to Bethany, Oklahoma. In 1972, he became sales manager and personnel director at Mathis Brothers Furniture Store for twelve years, then retired to Stuart where he pastored Friendship Church of the Nazarene and ranched, raising Limousin cattle.
Irwin and Doris had five children: Paul Douglas Harris, James Irwin Harris, Michael Dwayne Harris, David Alan Harris, and Donna Marie Earls. Doris predeceased him, as did his parents and four sisters: Axine, Maxine, Florence, and Margaree.
Irwin is survived by his wife: Arlita of Southern Plaza in Bethany; his five children; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and his brothers: Donald of Kahoka of Missouri and Dale of Chino Valley, Arizona.
He was a member of Western Oaks Church of the Nazarene in Oklahoma City, the Association of Retired Ministers and Missionaries, the Association of Senior Professionals at Southern Nazarene University, and the Bethany Improvement Foundation.
His faith and the love God have always been his source of guidance, comfort, and support. His wonderful Christian friends have always been an inspiration and encouragement. He loved his family deeply and leaves a testimony of faithfulness and prayer. He will see them again in Glory. Proverbs 3:5-6 were his life verses: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not on thy own understanding, in all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy path.”
A graveside service will be held at Pryor Cemetery in Stuart at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. Arrangements are entrusted to Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory of McAlester.
