Leon Milfred Bernard passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 14, 2024, in McAlester, Oklahoma. Born on February 9, 1928, in Stuart, Oklahoma, Leon was a man of faith, love, and dedication, whose life was a testament to the values he held dear. Leon was the cherished son of Eugene Bernard and Clara (Lawyer) Bernard. His early life in Stuart laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and strong family ties. On July 25, 1945, Leon married his beloved wife, Freda Crosthwait, embarking on a remarkable journey of 78 and a half years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and mutual respect until her passing in February of 2024. Leon's legacy continues through his loving family. He is survived by his son, Steve Bernard and wife Robbie; his daughter, Sandra Younger and husband Joe; his adored grandchildren, Summer Westbrook, Jim Westbrook, and Ryan Bernard; sister, Leila Hale of Broken Arrow; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, other family members, and a host of friends who were touched by his warmth and generosity. Before his brother, Ledon Bernard, and his parents preceded him in death, they witnessed Leon as a pillar of strength and support in their lives. Leon's family was his pride and joy, and he dedicated himself to providing for them in every way he could. Professionally, Leon was the proud co-owner and operator of 31 Auto Salvage with his nephew Jim Crosthwait, Jr. His work ethic and integrity were evident in the way he conducted his business. Leon's commitment to his work was matched only by his involvement in his community, where he was a steadfast member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester from 1965 until his passing. Leon's interests were a reflection of the man he was-simple yet profound. He was a man devoted to his family, finding joy in the time spent with his loved ones. An avid fisherman, Leon cherished the quiet moments by the water, reflecting on the beauty of nature. Traveling brought him and Freda great pleasure, as they created a tapestry of memories that spanned the globe. In quieter times, Leon could be found immersed in the pages of a western novel, losing himself in the stories of a bygone era. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at Chaney Harkins Funeral Home, McAlester. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2024 at the Pryor Cemetery Chapel near Stuart. The burial will follow.
