Randall Lynn Sumter, 61, of McAlester, Oklahoma passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Viewing will be Thursday, August 10, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory. A funeral service will be Friday, August 11, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Mike Miller will be officiating. A burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester, Oklahoma under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory. Active pallbearers will be Dustin Nash, Aaron Hendrix, and Dalston Vasquez. Randall was born to Lavell Sumter and Bonnie (Braden) Sumter on August 23, 1961 in Altus, Oklahoma. Randall's early life was shaped by his experiences living on various military bases due to his father's service in the Air Force. From Altus Air Force base in Oklahoma to Colombus Air Force base and Glasgow Air Force base in Mississippi, these experiences instilled in him a deep respect for discipline and service. After graduating high school in Caldwell, Idaho in 1979, Randall moved to Norman, Oklahoma, where he attended the University of Oklahoma. While at university, Randall demonstrated his commitment to service and leadership by joining the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and running for the campus police department. His time in Norman was transformative, setting the stage for a life of service and community involvement that would take him across the country. From Idaho to Washington State, and then to Corpus Christi, Texas, Randall's journey was marked by resilience and adaptability. Eventually, he settled in McAlester, Oklahoma, where he became a pillar of the community. Randall's professional life was characterized by his dedication and managerial skills. He managed the electronic departments at Service Merchandise Store demonstrating his ability to lead and inspire others. However, Randall was most recognized for his twenty-plus years as a Retail Manager at Goodwill Industries. His friendly demeanor and commitment to service made him a beloved figure in the community. His colleagues and customers alike appreciated his dedication to his work and his ability to make everyone feel valued and respected. On September 29, 2015, Randall married his wife, Robyn Sumter, in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Their marriage was a testament to their shared values of love, respect, and commitment. Together, they created a life filled with joy and mutual support. Randall was known for his fascination of trains and aircrafts. These modes of transport were infectious. In addition to his interests in transportation, Randall was also a devoted cat lover. His compassion for these animals was a proof to his kind and gentle nature. Randall was also incredibly skilled in electronics and computers. His ability to troubleshoot complex issues was truly remarkable. Randall's life was characterized by his friendly and humorous nature, his commitment to service, and his dedication and love to his family. He was a man who believed in the power of kindness and the importance of giving. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him and, in the community, he served so faithfully. He is survived by his wife of the home: Robyn Sumter; their children, Dustin Nash and wife, Viola of McAlester, Christa Hanks of Collinsville, Caitlyn Hanks and her significant other, Dalston Vasquez of Oilton, Valerie Hinton and husband, Allan of McAlester; grandchildren, Aubree Nash, Haylee Hendrix, Jayse Hanks, Greyson Vasquez, Olivia Vasquez, Lacey Lee, Zachary Rogers; one great grandson, William Nichols; brothers and sisters, Connie Obendorf of Virginia, Catherine Van Slyke of Indiana, Richard Sumter of Idaho, Ronald Sumter of Arkansas, Cynthia Sumter of Arkansas; nieces and nephews, Dennis Van Slyke of Texas, Meghan Rollin of Virginia , Andrea Sumter of Idaho, Steven Sumter of Idaho; two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Numerous other family members and friends. He is preceded in death by parents; Lavell and Bonnie Sumter; nephew, Jeffery Van Slyke.
