Steve Johnson, Sr., 70, of McAlester, passed away Monday, October 13, 2025 at McAlester Regional Health Center. The family will welcome friends for visitation on Friday, October 17th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 18th, at 10:00 a.m. at the East Star Baptist Church, with Pastor Bobby Maddox officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are Dwoodson Fuller, LaPharion Grant, Wyman BringingGood, Rodney Jenkins, Anthony BringingGood, and Kody Maynard. Honorary pallbearers are Elijah Johnson, Ethan Johnson, Brayden Jackson, Cassius Jackson, Zaiden Johnson, Ayson Fuller, and Trevon Cobb. Ewell Steve Johnson was born on August 2, 1955 in McAlester. He grew up here and graduated from McAlester High School in 1973, where he played on the varsity basketball team for 3 years. After graduation, Steve went to National Guard Boot Camp. After camp, Steve and his brother, Carl, both attended Carl Albert Junior College together on basketball scholarships from 1974 to 1976. Steve then transferred to Northeastern University, where he also played on the basketball team from 1976 to 1978, after college, Steve's commitment to the U. S. Army National Guard lasted over 17 years, receiving his honorable discharge as a sergeant and a demolition expert, thus his nickname "Dynamite". He also served as a Military Police Officer during his service. Steve returned to McAlester and worked at the National Guard Armory for a while and also worked as a concrete and construction contractor. Steve was also a proud cowboy and competed in local rodeos in roping events. He also loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren. And, he was known for wetting a hook at one of his many hot-spots in the area whenever he could. Steve is survived by his children, Talia Johnson-Mackey and husband Jermaine, Ewell Steve Johnson, Jr., Stephanie BringingGood, Natasha Johnson, Sabrina Johnson, Samantha Johnson, Ayana Johnson-Fuller and husband Dwoodson; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was also blessed with three bonus children, Wyman BringingGood, Rodney Jenkins. His third bonus child, Brandon Jenkins, preceded Steve in death. Steve is also survived by his siblings, Carl Johnson, Sr. and wife Bonita, Robert Johnson, Carla Johnson, Sandra Penn, Florice Watkins Colbert, Apolas Watkins, and Florence Watkins. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia Johnson and Homer Watkins, Sr.; siblings, Delois Humphrey, James Johnson, Frankie Johnson, Charles Johnson, Donald Johnson, Homer Watkins, Beulah Watkins Page, Armel Watkins Dabney, and Richard Wendell Watkins
