Carrie was born on November 15, 1929 in McNally Flats, Oklahoma just east of Canadian, daughter of Wilson "Nabe" Murdaugh and Eva Estelle (Duff) Murdaugh. Carrie attended Canadian Schools for 12 years and graduated from Canadian High School in 1947 as Valedictorian. Not only was she a good student, she loved playing basketball in high school. She would go back to the school and practice with the girls even after high school. Besides basketball, she also sang in the school choir. Carrie attended Business School and went to work as a secretary at the Pittsburg County Courthouse after graduation. In 1957, Carrie married Hoyt Edward Hughes on April 20. Carrie was a life- long member of the LDS Church, and was baptized as a small child in a creek out near McNally Flats. Carrie made a career out of being a legal assistant, and we have been told she was very good at it. She did this for many years. Later she and Hoyt had an opportunity with her brother, Ben, to purchase a furniture store, Murdaugh-Hughes. This is where she worked and learned the furniture business. Along came another opportunity when her son-in-law, Mike Fling, opened his dental practice. She helped him in his office by managing the front office and doing whatever was needed. Even later in life, Carrie worked with her brother Ben at his Allstate Insurance business where she retired at the age of 70. She was a busy lady, always helping someone do a project or get ready for some event. She was on the committee at church to arrange activities and do the decorations. She and sister-in-law Paula loved doing this together. She served 4 years as Secretary to the Pittsburg County Cattleman’s Association. Carrie was always a social person loving to entertain and be around people. She could talk to anyone. Carrie and Hoyt enjoyed traveling and following their family, watching them participate in music events, car races, horse shows and rodeos. Since Hoyt’s passing, Carrie and the girls went on several trips. Her middle name could have been Carrie Lou-Go. Carrie was preceded in death by parents: Nabe and Eva (Duff) Murdaugh; husband, Hoyt E. Hughes; daughter, Carrie Lynn Hughes; brothers, Bud Murdaugh and Bill Murdaugh. She is survived by daughters: Rhonda Bailey and Doyle of Tulsa, Leslie Fling and Mike of Edmond; and daughter-in-law: Kelly Hughes of Krebs; grandchildren, Michael Adkisson and Brittany of Prattville, Tyler Fling and Allie of Atlanta, Georgia, Kinsey Fling of Edmond, Amy Buie of McAlester, Nicole Smith of McAlester, Betsy Fellwock and Michael of Tulsa, Amy Freeman and Derek of Tulsa, Jill Garcia and Jeromy of Tulsa; multiple great grandchildren; brother, Ben Murdaugh and Paula of McAlester; sisters-in-law: Margaret Murdaugh of Stuart and Velba Murdaugh of McAlester; along with numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
