Laveta G. (Reed) Wasson, 88, of McAlester, Oklahoma passed away Thursday, June 19, 2025 in McAlester, Oklahoma. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 26, 2025 at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Lance McAfee will be officiating. A burial will follow at North Town Cemetery in McAlester, Oklahoma. Pallbearers will be Clinton Eubanks, Keith Reed, Jim Hill, Tommy Graham, Jimmy Rogers, and Brent Grilliot. Laveta was born on June 14, 1937, in Bower, Oklahoma to Fred Reed and Iva (Kilburn) Reed. Laveta graduated from Canadian High School in 1955. There she enjoyed playing basketball and met and married Fred Hearod. They moved to Oklahoma City and had two daughters, Jeannie and Janice. Laveta worked out of the home off and on as a secretary. Around 1970 they moved back to McAlester, Oklahoma. As time passes and people change, Laveta and Fred parted ways. Laveta would later move to Florida where she owned and operated a successful irrigation company, McCoy Irrigation, in Palm Beach County. At peak times the business employed up to 30 people. She ran the business along with her son-in-law, Kevin. Her daughter, Jeannie and, for a time, Laveta's son-in-law Rick worked along with them. While Rick and Janice lived in Florida, Laveta put Janice through college there and continued to support her college education as she pursued her education degree. Laveta traveled when she could. Her trips to Paris and Israel were highlights in her life. Shortly before retirement, Laveta married Walter Wasson on April 6, 1997. They both retired and moved to McAlester. They were happily married and best of friends for 28 years. Together they traveled in their RV, undertook construction projects at the home, and went to many estate sales. Bluegrass festivals were one of their favorite activities along with vacations with family. She was known around town for the massive garage sales they would have together. When Walter was unable to continue these with her, she carried on with her daughter, Jeannie, until her passing. Even at the age of 87 she was still planning her next garage sale. Laveta's greatest love was her family. She was loved and adored by all with a special place in her heart for her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchild. She traveled to see them when she could and would Facetime with them regularly. Her love and legacy is carried on in the lives of all she touched. Laveta is survived by her husband, Walter (Satch) Wasson of the home; daughters Regina (Jeannie) Hadley of McAlester; Janice Parrott and husband, Richard Parrott, of Kiowa; granddaughters, Melissa Phillips and husband, Harvey; Mandy Irving and husband, Jeff; Mollie Hey and husband, Spencer; great-grandchildren Mia Hadley, Rylin Irving, and Parker Hey; and great-great-grandson, Sonny Basil, all of Florida; her brothers, Jim Reed and Ernie Reed both of Oregon; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. Laveta is preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Iva Reed; a son-in-law, Kevin Hadley; her siblings, Juanita Ramsey, Harold Reed, Hubert Reed, and Barbara Nichols.
