John Boyd Phillips, 88, of McAlester, passed away Friday, Feb. 19, in McAlester. The family will welcome friends at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home on Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Graveside funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 26, at 2:00 p.m. at Memory Gardens Memorial Park in McAlester, officiated by Pastor Brian Smith. John Phillips was born on April 16, 1932 in Porum to Floyd and Dellie (Cude) Phillips, and has lived in McAlester virtually all his life. He and Mary Sue Griffin were married on July 24, 1953 in Phoenix, Ariz. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2013. John had served in the U. S. Navy in the mid-1950’s. John worked at the Army Ammunition Base as a truck driver for a number of years. He was also a minister, and continued that work into retirement, and pastored several Assembly of God churches in the area, including Lakeside Assembly of God Church in Crowder and the Assembly of God Church of Kiowa. He was also committed to mission work for the church and traveled all around the world sharing the Gospel. John was also an accomplished carpenter and enjoyed working with wood in his shop. John is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Karen Phillips and Jimmy Boyd and Rita Phillips; grandchildren, Jeremiah Phillips and wife Denise and their children Lavender and Luciana, Michelle Cochrane and husband Sean and their children, Hayden and Hailey, and Logan Phillips and wife Rendi and their children Sebastian, Ashton and Skylar; a brother, Kenneth “Chick” Phillips and wife Diane; and a sister-in-law, Jolene Phillips. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and a son, John Paul Phillips.
