Olene (Benham) McCurtain-Tanner, a loving and kind soul, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2023, in Allen, Texas. Born on May 31, 1927 in Darwin, Oklahoma, Olene lived a life full of love, compassion, and service to others. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023 at the Chaney Harkins Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the Chaney Harkins Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Jody Dominguez officiating. The burial will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Edmund McCurtain, Steven Phillips, Eric McCurtain, Jr., Stevey Purple Sugars, Eric McCurtain and Matthew Phillips. Olene was born to Alvery T. Benham and Marie (Williams) Benham. She was the beloved sister of Vernon, Roy, Bob, Ruby, Birdie, and Grace. In 1947, Olene married Edmund Elum McCurtain at the First Baptist Church of McAlester. Their union was blessed with three children: Stanley, Edmund, and Nancy. She is survived by her son: Edmund McCurtain and his wife, Lynn of McKinney, Texas, and her son-in-law: Steven Phillips of Houston, Texas. Olene was a proud grandmother to Sean McCurtain, Tracy McCurtain-Perez, Eric McCurtain, Jennifer McCurtain-Womble, Stevey Purple Sugars, and Matthew Phillips. She also had the joy of being a great-grandmother to Jacob, Kaleb, Gabriel, Tyler, Ashley, Samantha, Eric Jr., Maddox, and Oliver. Her legacy continues with her 3 great-great-grandchildren. Olene is also survived by her brother: Bob Benham of Indiana; brother-in-law: Jack Presnell of McAlester; sister-in-law: Doris McCurtain of Oklahoma City; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. Her family was her pride and joy, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings: Vernon Benham, Roy Benham, Ruby Presnell, Birdie Benson, and Grace Benham; her first husband: Edmund Elum McCurtain; her son: Stanley Grene McCurtain; and her daughter: Nancy Ann Phillips. Olene and her sister Ruby worked at Woolworth's Department Store in McAlester. She was a dedicated employee who took pride in her work. After retiring, she devoted her time to being a homemaker, where she found joy in cooking, painting and arts and crafts. Her home was always filled with the aroma of delicious meals and the sight of her beautiful paintings and crafts. She had a heart full of love and a spirit full of generosity. Her life was a testament to the quote by Mother Teresa, "Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." Olene lived this quote every day, touching the lives of those around her with her kindness and love. Olene's life was a beautiful journey filled with love, laughter, and happiness. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. May her soul rest in peace.
