There are many beliefs surrounding the history of Homegoing Celebrations and what it solidifies in different cultures. We remember the guidance and wisdom shared from the Old Testament stories of God and Moses freeing an enslaved people who were held captive, to the New Testament promises of Jesus, roads paved in gold in Heaven, and the blessings of the afterlife. From this, African Americans adopted the belief that a homegoing service marked the celebratory return of a loved one to the Lord and Heaven, and what a glorious occasion it would be. There is hope that if we continue to trust God, we will one day know freedom like nothing we've known before. In honor of this tradition, today, we go on this final journey celebrating the life, legacy, and homegoing of our dearly loved, Lemmer Lee Harris. On May 6, 1932, Otis John Sr., and Myrtle Mae (Williams) Hammons were blessed with a beautiful baby girl in Eufaula Oklahoma, Lemmer Lee Hammons. Lemmer Lee attended L'Ouverture School, going on to continue her education years later pursuing an associate degree in early childhood education from Eastern Oklahoma State University in Wilburton, Oklahoma. She was united in holy matrimony to Floyd Harris in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Lemmer Lee genuinely loved people! No matter who she met, she was known for her big heart, generous spirit, and willingness to help. From a young age, Lemmer Lee knew she was called to serve and as a pillar to her community, she fulfilled that purpose across the Alderson, Krebs, and McAlester areas, always willing to offer her assistance and guidance to anyone in need. Lemmer Lee worked full-time in childcare, was an active member of Ward Chapel A.M.E church, and volunteered her time with numerous organizations, including Inner City Productions, Inc. Lemmer Lee was preceded in death by her parents, Otis John Hammons, and Myrtle Mae (Williams) Hammons, and her husband, Floyd Harris. In true Godly character, in all her specialness with a genuine spirit, Lemmer Lee cherished every relationship shared with her siblings. She was preceded in death by her siblings Rena Hammons Kirk, John D. Hammons Sr., Levi Hammons, Hersey Lee Hammons, Sr, Pearline Ulander (Brown) Robinson, Betty Jean (Brown) Williams, Otis John Hammons Jr., EJ Hammons, Daniel C. Hammons, William Hammons; Her children, Jesse Lee Harris Sr., Virgil Arenta (Harris) Taylor, Kenneth Eugene Harris, and Georgianna Kay (Harris) Anderson, and one grandson Kevin LaMonte Harris. Lemmer Lee proudly faced every situation with grace and gratitude knowing that every moment made her the woman she was destined to be. She lived her life trusting God, knowing there was nothing she couldn't do once she put her mind to it. The impact she leaves and her love for others extends far beyond anything we could imagine and will last throughout generations. We can only wish for enough time to share the stories of how she touched each of our lives, remembering her for who she was as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. And it is without a doubt that she has left an impact on the lives of many, but none as much as those of us who are part of her life and legacy. She is survived by her dear brother, Jerry Hammons; two daughters: Myrtle L. (Allan) Collins of Wagoner, OK, and Ruth (Shelby) Smith of Little Rock, AR; Grandchildren: Children of Jesse Lee Sr.: Deidre M. (Joe) Watts, Jesse L. Harris Jr., Darryl Harris (Diana), LaToya Mace and their mother Meredith J. Harris, Antonio (Vanessa) Hurte, Jerald and Alfie Harris, and Jeff (Heidi) Liscum and his mother Kay Liscum; The children of Myrtle: James Williams and Debra (Tyrone) Davis; Children of Virgil: Juanitta (Khalid) Jefferson and Jamie Wright; Children of Kenneth: David (Shantel) Keith, Nakia Cox, Kendrick Harris, Kenneth Harris, and their mother Iris W. Harris, and Jennifer Kirk; Children of Kay: Christine Anderson and Victor (Laura) Anderson; Children of Ruth: Joshua (Johnetta) Smith; Samuel (Elizbeth), Eric Brown, Sarah Smith, Danyelle Williams, and Claire Smith. She has a host of great grandchildren nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. While our hearts may mourn with sorrow, we rejoice to know that with her last breath, she had Godly peace, and she is finally home. To you, Lemmer Lee, we celebrate; Happy Heavenly 91st Birthday and Mother's Day in Heaven.
