Mary Deane (Armstrong) Brassfield, 102, of McAlester, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at her residence surrounded by her family. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park Cemetery officiated by Chaplain Louis Reynolds. Burial to follow. Honorary pallbearers will be George Lampton, Virgil Grantham, Greg Armstrong, Steven Armstrong, Donald Armstrong, and Richard Armstrong. Mary was born to Lon and Annie (Manley) Armstrong on March 15, 1921 in Caney, Oklahoma. She was raised in McAlester where she graduated from McAlester High School, and attended college classes locally. Mary married John Carl Brassfield on October 28, 1939 in Coalgate after awakening the minister late in the evening. She was an accomplished real estate agent working with Shirley Donaldson, Charlotte Partain, and Select Properties Realty, retiring at the age of 85. She also owned and operated Carla's Interiors downtown on Choctaw Avenue and an Antique Mall in McAlester. Mary was very active in the community. She was a member of various organizations, a local bridge club, and was an active member of First Baptist Church for many years. She loved to spoil her granddaughter, Marlo, and her great-grandchildren, Ava and Lauren. Mary enjoyed spending time with family and friends entertaining, decorating, shopping, and playing bridge. Mary was preceded in death by her parents: Lon and Annie Armstrong; her husband: J. Carl Brassfield; brothers: Lee Armstrong, Bob Armstrong, Richard Armstrong, and Charles Armstrong; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Leo and Reba (Brassfield) Lampton, Jack and Mamie (Brassfield) Grantham; and cousins: Cap Grantham, Jackie Grantham McBroom, and Lynn Armstrong Smith. She is survived by her daughters: Jan Brassfield, Carla Brassfield; granddaughter: Marlo Barton-Burk; great-granddaughters: Ava Katherine Burk, Lauren Elizabeth Burk, all of McAlester; sister-in-law: Wilda McCormick; nieces and nephews: Molly Snyder, Virgil Grantham, George Lampton, Sidney Armstrong, Tammy Hawkins, Greg Armstrong, Jennifer Armstrong; and other family members and friends.
