Charlie Mass, age 95 died Sunday, August 14, 2016 at his home in Hartshorne. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2016 at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Hartshorne with Father Bruce Brosnahan officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Hartshorne under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of Hartshorne. The Rosary will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 7:00 pm at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home Chapel in Hartshorne with Don McCaslin officiating. Charlie Francis Mass was born on February 7, 1921 in Hartshorne, the son of Fred Mass, Sr. and Bonnie (Appugliese) Mass. Charlie grew up in Hartshorne and graduated from Hartshorne High School and later attended Eastern State College in Wilburton and has lived in Hartshorne all his life. Charlie served his country in World War II from 1942 to 1946, where he was part of the 202nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery/Automatic Weapons Battalion (Semi-mobile)("B" Battery). Charlie was deployed to the Pacific Theater from Camp Cooke, California and served in New Guinea and the Philippines where he saw combat action under fire. After the war, Charlie came home to Hartshorne and married his sweetheart, Jewel Louitha Parkison, on June 24, 1949 and they raised 2 boys, Ronald and Gary Mass. Charlie worked for 36 years at the Army Ammunition Plant as an Explosive Operator in the Production and Maintenance Division. Charlie retired in 1981. Charlie was a member of the American Legion Post 180 of Hartshorne and was a long time member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Survivors include 1 son, Gary Mass of Hartshonre; 2 sisters, Mary Derichsweiler and Florence Tillman, both of Denison, Texas; 2 sisters-in-law, Carmaleta Mass of Angleton, Texas, Lois Mass of Hartshorne; granddaughter, Crystal Mass of Oregon; grandson, Ronald Mass of Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred, Sr. and Bonnie Mass; his wife, Jewel Louitha Parkison Mass; a son, Rongald Charles Mass; brothers, Tony Mass, Fred Mass, Jr., Donald Mass and Pete Mass; a sister, Kathryn Mass Everett. Active pallbearers are Don McCaslin, Joe Garzarella, Ted Sitters, Jr., Johnny Bernardi, Frankie Ranallo and Jim Kurilko. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army Honor Guard from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma.
