Carl Joseph Ely was born August 20, 1945 at McAlester, OK and died November 17, 2004 at Pittsburg, OK. Funeral service is at the First Baptist Church, Pittsburg, OK 2:30 p.m. Friday November 19, 2004. Officiating is Dr. Jim Davidson and Dr. Jim Roebuck. Pallbearers are Paul Shannon, Larry Griffin, Coy Shannon, Willie Tucker, Jackie Rice, Benny Whitworth, Jerry Johnston and Joe Ryan. Interment is Pittsburg Cemetery, Pittsburg, OK. Survivors include his mother, Jessie Ely; nephew, Joe Ely and wife Jeana; niece, Lana Boren and husband Roger; great nieces, Shelby Ely, Bridgett Boren, Heather Boren and Jessie Boren; sister-in-law, Leona Ely.He was the son of Joe A. and Jessie (Smart) Ely. He graduated from Pittsburg High School and received an associate's degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a communications sergeant, a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne Division and a member of the Green Berets. He participated in the Tet Offensive at Fhouk Vin in 1968, receiving two Bronze Star medals. He worked at the Naval Ammunition Depot and then as a self-employed electrician. He was a resident of Pittsburg and passed away at his home at the age of 59. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe A. Ely; brothers, Truman Ely, and Coy Ely; paternal grandparents, Alvin and Georgia Ely, and maternal grandparents, Jake and Ora Smart. Survivors include his mother, Jessie Ely, of the home; nephew, Joe Ely and wife, Jeana, of Blanchard; niece, Lana Boren and husband, Roger, of Gracemont. Also, great-nieces, Shelby Ely, Bridgett Boren, Heather Boren, and Jessie Boren; sister-in-law, Leona Ely, of Ashland, and numerous special friends and neighbors.
