Chester Ely, Jr. of Ashland died Friday, December 15, 2023 in Coalgate at the age of 83. Viewing will be 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, December 18, 2023 at Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Tuesday December 19, 2023 at the Gussie Ely Memorial Chapel at Ashland Cemetery officiated by Lance Burnett. Burial will follow. Due to the health concerns of Chester’s wife; Willa Dean, the family asks that friends respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time. In lieu of home visits and food donations, please make a donation or contribution to your favorite charity. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Chester was one of ten children born to Chester Ely, Sr. and Ruby Pearl (Lay) Ely on November 3, 1940 in Ashland. He graduated from Ashland High School. He married Willa Dean Poe on June 4, 1960 at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in McAlester. Chester was a 3rd generation cattle rancher. He enjoyed racing horses, quail hunting and working on the ranch. He owned and operated the family ranch for 60 years. He was a car salesman by trade and was nationally recognized by General Motors for sales. He had worked Estep Chevrolet in Atoka and at Fenton Motors in McAlester. The legacy of Chester’s life will live long through his children and grandchildren. He will be missed, but not forgotten. Chester was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Ruby Ely; brothers, Frank Ely, Gene Ely, Frederick Ely, Halsell, Ely, Alvin Ely; and sisters, Dortha Sue Ely, Loretta Crowder. He is survived by his wife, Willa Dean of the home; daughter, Lori Colburn of McAlester; son, Jim Ely and wife, Lesa of Edmond; daughter, Jeffie Ely of Ashland; 3 grandchildren, Laramie Burnett and husband, Lance, Cameron Ely, Holly Ely; 2 great grandchildren, Brinkley Burnett, Sawyer Burnett; sisters, Legatha Hop, Betty Crother and her friend, Claude Dennis; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
