Yale, Oklahoma March 1910 1852 ~ March 24, 1910 Thursday morning, March 24, while Martin Thorpe was engaged in repairing some fences on a piece of his land situated on the Cimarron bottom about a mile up river from the home farm, a large tree which had been weakened by a recent fire fell upon him, crushing his skull and killing him instantly. The body was taken to Cushing, Saturday morning where funeral services were conducted according to usage of the Catholic Church, of which he was a member. Martin Thorpe was of Irish parentage, prominent in democratic politics and in local affairs. A man of fine intelligence and a good neighbor, he was ever a dependable friend and a generous opponent. His sister’s orphaned children were a part of his family, for nine years his invalid father, who died a few weeks ago, received every care and attention that a good son could give, in the Thorpe Home. Nor was his kindness and generosity limited to his own kindred. Although a shrewd dealer and very suggessful in business affairs, his his purse was ever open to public needs and ti personal necessities. Mr Thorpe was a good friend to Yale, and our people appreciated his friendship for the town and his efforts in its behalf. To huis bereaved family the people of Yale extend their earnest sympathy. |
