Uncle John Riley Stephens
October 11, 1849 ~ January 14, 1926


John R. Stephens was born in Makosky County, Iowa, October 11, 1849, died at his home in Glencoe, Oklahoma, January 14, 1926, aged 76 years, 3 months and 3 days.

He was married to Elizabeth Heilman at Quenemo, Kansas, September 23, 1874.

To this union were born three boys and three girls as follows: John Wesley Stephens, dead; Willis W. Stephens of Glencoe; Frank Stephens, of Glencoe; Mrs. Dr. Selph, of Stillwater; Mrs. Dora Withers, of Glencoe and Flora A. Stephens, dead.

He leaves 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

In 1863 he enlisted in Co. I of the Fourteenth regiment Kansas Cavalry, from which he was honorably discharged June 25, 1865, at Ft. Gibson, Ark.

He became a Christian 53 years ago and died a member of the Christian church of Glencoe.

He leaves the wife of his youth, two sons, two daughters and two sisters, Mrs. Frank Messenger, of Kansas City, and Mrs. W.W. Manning, of Gentry, Arkansas.
